Antibullying Week

This week is antibullying week, and this year’s theme is Change Starts With us.

‘Whether it is verbal, physical, online or inperson, bullying has a significant impact on a child’s life well into adulthood. By making small, simple changes, we can break this cycle and create a safe environment for everyone. Because together we can challenge bullying. Change starts with a conversation. It starts with checking in, it starts with working together’ – The Anti Bullying Alliance

What is antibullying week?

It is an annual UK event which is held in the third week of November which aims to raise awareness of bullying in children and young people. It is a big focus in schools throughout this time and it used to highlight ways of preventing bullying and responding to it.

During this week there is a day which is an opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique. This is called Odd Socks Day.

The Facts.

· 1 in 4 children reported being bullied a lot or always

· Disabled children or those with SEN are around twice as likely to be bullied

· Children who are eligible for school meals are more likely to be victims of bullying

· 1 in 10 children have missed school due to bullying

· 1 in 5 children said they have steered clear of spending time with their friends to avoid being bullied

· Nearly a quarter of children said their parents had not spoken to them about bullying

What can we do?

We can listen to young people and take time out to talk about our day.

We can teach our children about the importance of empathy and being kind to others and how important it is to include everyone.

We can show them how our words and behaviour can impact othes.

But most of all we can teach them how everyone is different, but we are all equal.

We can help them to make a change – Change Starts with Us
