Posted on 08/06/2023 by Evolve in News

Child Safety Week runs from Monday 5th June to Sunday 11th June.

The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) is the UK's leading charity working to reduce the number of children and young people killed, disabled or seriously injured in accidents. Many of these accidents can be prevented.

Below are some tips to keep your child safe.

Burns

  • Hot drinks : Push the mug to the back of the worktop before reaching for the milk
  • Hair straighteners: Keep hot hair straighteners and wands out of reach
  • Button batteries: Keep any loose batteries out of reach and dispose of flat batteries quickly and safely
  • Cooking: If your able to, keep children away from the kitchen when your cooking
  • Bath water: Put cold water in first and then top up with hot
  • Staying warm: Fit fireguards around fires heater

Breathe Easy

  • Window Blinds: Fit a clean hook or tensioner to keep blind cords and chains safely away
  • Nappy Sacks: Store nappy sacks well out of reach of babies
  • Sleeping: A clear cot is a safe cot - avoid duvets, pillows and bumpers
  • Choking: Cut round food like grapes, tomatoes and big blueberries in half lengthways

Scrapes and Bruises

  • Cots, Beds & Changing Tables: Even small babies can wriggle off a bed or changing table - so change their nappies on the floor and avoid leaving them on a raised surface
  • Stairs: As soon as your baby starts moving around, fit safety gates to stop them climbing or falling down the stairs
  • Highchairs: Make sure you use straps when a baby is in the highchair
  • Windows: Get safety catches or locks fitted on your windows
  • Trampolines: Use a safety net or cage so children cant be thrown onto the ground

Safe around Roads

  • Pedestrians - younger children: Get children into a habit of holding your hand or use walking reins
  • In the car: Make sure your car seat is the right one for your child's height and weight and for your car
  • Cycling: Get your child into a habit of wearing their helmet
  • Driving: Keep an eye on your speed and keep your phone away so it can't distract you
