03 – 09 October 2022 is Dyslexia Awareness Week.
Dyslexia influences at least 1 in 10 people and is a genetic difference in an individual’s ability to learn and process information.
There are over 6 million individuals in the UK who have dyslexia, some who may not have received a diagnosis.
If a child isn’t diagnosed in their younger years and does not receive the support that they need, the impact can be lifelong.
There are many different signs of dyslexia and these signs can change with age.
Pre-School Children
Symptoms can include:
· Delayed speech development
· Speech Problems. This includes ‘jumbling’ up phrases. For example, “Beddy Tear” instead of “Teddy Bear”
· Problems expressing themselves using spoken language
Primary School Children
Symptoms can include:
· Problems learning the names and sounds of letters
· Spelling that’s unpredictable
· Confusing the order of letters in words
· Ready slowly or making errors when reading aloud
· Slow hand writing speed/Poor handwriting
Teenagers and Adults
As well as the signs already mentioned above, the symptoms of Dyslexia in older children and adults can include:
· Poorly written work
· Difficulty writing letters or reports
· Trying to avoid reading whenever possible
· Difficulty taking notes
· Poor spelling
If you are worried about your child’s progress with reading and writing, then first talk to their teacher.
